Wisdom Teeth Removal/Minor Oral Surgery
Removal of wisdom teeth is a common dental procedure that eliminates problems associated with wisdom tooth development, including pain, pericorinitis (gum infection) and gum disease, pathology, crowding, orthodontics, decay and damage to the surrounding jaw bone and teeth.
Wisdom teeth are our 3rd molars, or simply put, our last set of molars. They are usually the last four teeth to erupt into the oral cavity and generally push through during our late teen years to early twenties. The term “wisdom” is used to describe the stage in life when a person matures into adulthood and is supposedly “wiser” than when other teeth have erupted.
It is important to remember that having wisdom teeth does not mean they need to be removed. You may not experience any problems with your wisdom teeth. There may be sufficient space in your mouth to accommodate these teeth. However, many people do experience issues. A lot of the time, the problem is not the wisdom teeth itself but the jaw is often too small to accommodate the erupting wisdom teeth comfortably. This is why the development of wisdom teeth commonly cause problems that can lead to more serious issues.
The best way to determine whether you require wisdom teeth removal is to have it assessed with a dental examination which includes a thorough assessment of your wisdom teeth. Your age, your current medical health, how these teeth have erupted or are erupting in the mouth, the size of the jaw as well as other factors would require consideration.
As with all procedures, wisdom teeth removal carries it’s own set of risks and complication outcomes. Our team will provide you with all the appropriate information and brochures outlining these risks so you can make an informed decision. Here at Narangba Dental, we have dentists who can perform wisdom teeth removal chairside or you may be referred to a specialist and this will depend on each individual circumstance.
