Emergency Treatment and Trauma Care

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. Some things are simply unavoidable and your mouth can be a major area of impact and trauma. The reality is that accidents can have quite serious consequences. The good news, however, is that dental injuries to your teeth can be minimised or prevented if you know what precautions to take and know what to do.

You can be rest assured our team at Narangba Dental are passionate and dedicated to Compulsory Professional Development (CPD) and that we are up to date with the latest trauma policies and recommendations. We will endeavour to get you in as soon as possible to receive treatment for your injury and to guide you on the road to recovery.

In the unfortunate event of a permananent tooth being knocked out, quickly following these steps can minimise any long term damage. The key thing is to act quickly and to call us immediately.

  • Find the tooth.  Make sure it’s clean and hold it by the crown if possible. Try to avoid holding it by the root if at all possible.
  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it in milk but don’t scrub it.
  • Reposition the tooth back into place, making sure it’s facing the right way. If it is a baby tooth, DO NOT place it back in as it may damage the developing permanent tooth.
  • Gently bite down on a soft cloth to hold it in place.
  • Give us a call as soon as possible. If you can’t replant the tooth, transport it in milk or saliva in a cup or a small jar.

Other emergency events may include developing toothache.  Take appropriate painkillers as necessary, use salt water mouth rinses, and if there’s swelling present, place a cold pack in the region of the swelling.  Give us a call immediately so we can get you out of trouble.

If you play any contact sports, it's a good idea to wear a custom-fitted mouthguard. Even though this does not guarantee you will avoid injury all together, it does minimise the chance of sustaining serious damage. Please remember that prevention is the key.  If you cannot wear a custom-made mouth guard, a chemist branded one is better than not wearing one at all.  If you need answers, give us a call and one of our team will be happy to discuss any questions you may have.

Narangba Dental utilises a HICAPS system to claim from your health fund at the time of your appointment. Whilst health fund rebates may vary, our primary relationship is with you, the patient and not your health fund. We are happy to provide you with itemised quotes prior to commencing, enabling you to confer with your chosen fund to establish the benefits you will receive towards the cost of your treatment.
